IEEE citation guide

IEEE uses numbered references. Each number points to a source in the reference list.

Order of first appearance

Add your sources in the order they first appear in the paper. Use Move up and Move down to adjust the order. Changing the order also changes the reference numbers, so update the citations in your paper.

Article and book details

Enter journal title, volume, issue and the full page range for journal articles. For books, add the publisher, year and edition when relevant. Enter a DOI or URL for an online source.

Reuse a source number

A source keeps the same reference number when cited again. This builder stores one entry per source; do not add a duplicate just because you cite it twice. Your target journal may have additional requirements.

Book example

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, T. Egerton, 1813. Quoted page: 15.

Preview and formatted downloads preserve the citation’s italics. Page numbers should match the edition you actually used.
