In-text citations and bibliography entries
An in-text citation points a reader to the source’s full entry. Both parts need to agree.
Author–date and author–page
APA, Harvard and Chicago author–date usually identify an author and year. MLA usually uses an author and page. A quoted passage often needs a precise locator.
Numbered styles
IEEE, AMA and Vancouver use a reference number. Add sources in first-appearance order and update paper citations whenever you change that order.
Chicago notes
Copy the full note into your word processor’s footnote or endnote feature. Later citations may use shortened notes. This tool does not manage repeated notes or automatically edit your manuscript.
