MLA 9 citation guide
MLA connects an author or title and a passage locator to an entry in a Works Cited list.
Identify the container
A container is the larger work that holds your source. A journal holds an article; a book can hold a chapter. Enter that name in the journal, website or book-title field.
Names, titles and locations
Enter full names rather than initials. Use title case for English titles. Supply a page range for an article or chapter, and a DOI or stable URL for an online work when available.
In-text citations
Enter a page number for a passage with numbered pages. The generator uses the saved bibliography to distinguish multiple works by the same author. Do not invent page numbers for webpages. Works Cited entries are alphabetically ordered and normally double spaced.
Book example
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, T. Egerton, 1813. Quoted page: 15.
Works Cited entry

In-text citation

Preview and formatted downloads preserve the citation’s italics. Page numbers should match the edition you actually used.
